When was the last time you saw a completely new and revolutionary idea in bass guitar construction? Well, here is one for the history books, the new Marleaux Spock!
This particular bass is Spock #9, and it was the very first fretless Spock made.

The most striking feature of the Marleaux SPOCK: The archtop body of the electric bass, which is 100% made in Germany, consists of a “Marleaux Logic Mesh” top. This light-transparent material, unique and never used before in bass construction, has enormous strength. And most importantly: the material sounds sensational! This sustainably created material was developed by Engineering students at Clausthal-Zellerfeld Technical University in a collaborative project with Marleaux that was supported and funded by the German Ministry of Economic Affairs.
The “Marleaux Logic Mesh” ceiling makes it possible to realize a wide variety of customer visual ideas. (You can supply any piece of fabric - such as your favorite shirt - and have it made into a bass guitar!) But it's not just the look that speaks for this unusual concept, because the SPOCK also scores points with its exceptionally low weight.
The Marleaux SPOCK combines a 32-inch scale length (medium scale) with a whopping 28 frets. The sustainable wooden pickup housing hides two coils with the option of parallel, serial and single-coil connection via mini switch. The onboard electronics with 3-band EQ and passive tone control can also be used purely passively.
Another new feature of the Marleaux SPOCK is the innovative bridge design manufactured in-house: the floating tailpiece made of a wood-stainless steel laminate can be ordered in different versions thanks to Regio Tone Wood.
The body is largely open air, framed in London Plane wood, and the German Sycamore Maple neck is capped with a 28 fret Pau Ferro fingerboard from Bolivia.
Thanks to its incredibly light weight, this bass is a total joy to play. Like all the Marleaux creations, it feels extremely comfortable, smooth and precise with absolutely stellar craftsmanship throughout.
The extremely resonant properties of the body are particularly wonderful when paired with a fretless instrument. The delicious tone of this bass is nothing short of pure magic, whether in active or passive mode.
It weighs a mere 6.5 lbs., yet balances perfectly whether on a strap or in your lap, a total joy to hold and to play.
